Thread lift

A thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure to improve skin laxity in various parts of the face, neck, arms, thighs and abdomen. The common areas treated with a thread lift include the jowls, midface, brow and neck. We use the Sinclair Silhouette Soft Threads with the cones in our treatments and NOT PDO Threads.

Benefits of thread lifts

There are a variety of different threads currently available on the market, such as PDO threads. However, the Silhouette Soft is one of the most advanced and popular threads used and it is only performed by doctors. Silhouette Soft® uses a double action effect to restore smoother and more toned skin, but also a more shapely face. To meet this requirement, Silhouette Soft® combines two effects: An immediate repositioning of the tissue and a gradual regeneration of collagen.

Thread lift procedure

The procedure is very safe and is done under a local anaesthetic. Like any other hair transplant there are 3 stages of harvesting the hair, making the site for implantation and finally implanting the hair. The duration depends on the size of the procedure. We classify them as small, medium and large procedures depending on the number of follicles needed.

Options

Depending on the place to use the threads, the number of threads needed will be determined. In some instances only one thread is needed on each side, while in some 2 or 3 on each side. It is possible to place a total of 10 or 12 threads in one session if needed

Threads can be combined with fillers, as the fillers often give the foundation for the threads to be based on especially when there is a loss of volume or body fat. We often like to do the fillers first and two weeks later follow in the with thread lift treatment.

After Care

There is little down time with threads. Tell tell signs might be evident in some for up to 4 days, but in genera any signs fade away after 24 to 48 hours.

Avoid massaging or rubbing the area where the thread was placed for at least 72 hours. Cool packs help prevent swelling or bruising.

You can wash the area as normal and on the face apply make up after 24 hours of the treatment.

Threads can last up to 12-18 months and can be repeated at a future date.

are thread lifts safe

In experienced hands, thread lifts are extremely safe, however with a lack of understanding of basic anatomy, like anything else, they can be dangerous.

How long will the results last

Threads are biodegradable materials, and so the result will fade over time. They can last for up to 18 months in some people.

How many times can you have them

The treatment can be repeated as desired whenever the result fades away.

Frequently asked questions

The thread lift is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic. The procedure is very comfortable in most cases. The threads are inserted at predetermined entry points and exits at also planned points. You will then be asked to sit up to allow adjustment of the skin over the cones until the desired result is achieved. Antiseptic ointment applied to the entry and exit points.

The repositioning effect is immediate and discreet. It is the result of tissue compression and skin elevation at the time of implanting the suture. The regenerating effect is gradual: Poly L-lactic acid (PLLA), the principal component of Silhouette Soft® is a well-known polymer that has been used for many years in a number of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. It is because this polymer shows excellent biocompatability and is biodegradable that such applications have been developed. The small cones on the Silhouette Soft® Suture provide traction and fixation points, a natural foreign body reaction then reinforces this, by the build-up of new collagen formation. This action is what helps restore shapeliness to the face and neck.

The results of the list will last between 12 to 18 months depending on your skin quality. It is sometimes necessary to do other treatments before the thread to improve the skin quality and maximise the result. As the thread dissolves it helps to lay new collagen under the skin, improving the overall skin quality as well.

Yes. Once the previous thread effect have worn off, it’s possible to have another thread, or any other treatment you desire, including a facelift.

The frequency of complications following thread lifts performed by experienced and trained plastic surgeons is uncommon. The reported complications include:

Pain and discomfort

It is normal to experience some discomfort and pain during and soon after the procedure.

Bruising and Swelling

Bruising can happen after the procedure and will usually resolve with the need for any further treatment. It is also normal to experience some swelling after the procedure. This will normally subside within a few days after the procedure.

Bleeding

Bleeding is uncommon after a thread lift but can rarely occur. This may even result in a haematoma, which is accumulation of blood under the skin. If these are small then they would normally resolve without the need for any other treatment.

Asymmetry

All people will have some degree of asymmetry and so there may be residual asymmetry after treatment. Thread lifts are often used in the treatment of facial palsy where patients have major facial asymmetry.

Dimpling

It is normal to get some dimpling of the skin after the thread lift procedure. This usually settles within a few days.

Residual Laxity

The thread lift will improve skin laxity although it may not fully correct it. There may be some overcorrection initially which relaxes after a week or so.

Nerve Injury

Nerve injury or injury to deep structures is extremely rare if the procedure is performed by a specialist registered plastic surgeon who is familiar with the anatomy of the face. The plane of the thread lift is superficial to important facial structures and so the risk of damage to these is low.

Allergic Reactions

It is uncommon to have an allergic reaction to the thread material or local anaesthetic used in the thread lift procedure but it can occur.

Failure of Procedure

It is important to be aware of the limitations of the procedure. The results will vary greatly from one patient to another.
