What is Liposuction
Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure designed to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body. It is commonly used for fat reduction, body sculpting, and lipofilling—where the removed fat is transferred to another area for augmentation or contouring.
What Is Liposuction Used For?
Liposuction is ideal for targeting stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is frequently combined with other body contouring procedures such as:
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
Thigh lift
Arm lift (brachioplasty)

What to expect
During Your Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction is typically performed as a day-case procedure, either under local or general anaesthetic depending on the area being treated. After anaesthesia is administered, a tumescent fluid—a mix of saline, local anaesthetic, and a vasoconstrictor—is injected into the targeted areas to reduce bleeding, numb the area, and make fat removal easier.
Once the fluid has taken effect, the surgeon inserts a thin, hollow tube called a cannula through small (2–3 mm) incisions to gently break up and suction out excess fat. The incisions are usually placed in discreet, hidden areas. The procedure typically lasts between 1 to 3 hours, depending on the number of areas treated and the amount of fat being removed.
After fat removal, the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures and covered with waterproof dressings. A compression garment is applied immediately to help reduce swelling and support the new contours. Most patients can go home the same day and begin light activity within a few days.

FAQ
How much fat can be removed in one operation?
That very much depends on several factors and requires careful consideration. Even though it is very tempting to remove “as much as possible”, there are safety concerns to be taken into account. Dr Souéid will discuss these in detail as part of the consultation. Removing too much fat too quickly can lead to dangerous fluid shits, more visible irregularities, and more likely to have redundant skin that cannot shrink.
What are the risks of liposuction?
Liposuction is considered to be a safe procedure when performed by a fully trained surgeon that is a BAPRAS or BAAPS member. Complications are rare but can occur, they may include:
Scars
The entry ports will leave small scars around 5mm long or less.
Contour Irregularities and Asymmetry
There may be areas of irregularity or minor differences between two sides. Skin that is loose or has poor elasticity will not shrink as much as good skin, resulting in a more saggy appearance after treatment. A strict post-operative regime helps to achieve better results.
Emboli
Blood and fat clots travelling in the blood stream, also known as emboli. If they reach the lung they can cause a pulmonary embolus.
Organ Injury
Cannulas are rigid instruments and there are reported cases of injury to organs in the abdomen (organ perforation). This is potentially life threatening.
Will the treated areas come back?
If you put on weight then the remaining fat cells may increase in size.
Seroma
This a collection of fluid that can form. It usually settles alone, but sometimes needs aspiration.
Numbness
It is very unlikely to suffer from a decreased sensation of the skin afterwards, however if you do most likely this will be temporary.
Fat necrosis
Fat can sometimes clump together and form hard lumps under the skin. Most of the time that settles spontaneously.
how much weight can you lose after liposuction?
Each one liter of fat will be equivalent for one kilogram of weight, but in reality this does not translate like that. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure but for removing stubborn fat and body shaping.
What is liposuction and how does it work?

How long is the recovery after liposuction?
Recovery times vary, but most patients resume normal activities within a week. Swelling and bruising may persist for a few weeks. Wearing compression garments and following post-operative instructions are crucial for optimal healing.
Are the results of liposuction permanent?
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from treated areas. However, maintaining results requires a stable weight through diet and exercise. Significant weight gain can affect the overall outcome
What is the aftercare after liposuction?
It is very important to keep mobile after the procedure to prevent post-operative complications. You should also wear the provided pressure garment as this is specially designed to maintain a uniform pressure to prevent fluid collection and irregularities.
